Great Cartoons - Damn Dirty Ape edition

Posted by ZekeySpaceyLizard Jun. 29, 2009 @ 8:18 AM EDT

Our dried voices, when
We whisper together
Are quiet and meaningless
As wind in dry grass

today's cartoons are a trip down memory lane for alot of people. at the same time however, alot of people on this site sadly were way too young or not even born yet when these were in play. which makes me sad and feel old all at the same time.

Liquid Television. Oddities.

MTV's strange and bizarre slot of bizarre animation from around the globe coupled with music videos. yes, back when MTV played music and not reality shows 24 hours per day. good times.

either way, alot of famous cartoons and cartoonists had films in the Liquid Television block and while i'd love to go at length about who and what and when, I am far too lazy.

So instead I will post my favorites.

FIRST THINGS FIRST

I am posting the Maxx. Chances are unless you enjoyed the seedy underbelly of comics in the 90's you've never of the Maxx. The Maxx was a strange series published by Image (who are still gods when it comes to alternative comics these days) about a whole variety of fucked up shit. I honestly cant describe them. But anyone who's read them would remember them. They scar themselves into your mind. I still feel queezy when I think about the origins of the villain, Mr.Gone. Christ, what a nightmarishly brilliant and horrifying issue.

blah blah blah I'm rambling.
Anyway.

I'm going to post a couple episodes.
The whole miniseries is out online. If you are a fan of these, I HIGHLY recommend going out and watching the rest.

And I highly HIGHLY recommend reading the comics as well. For anyone with an appreciation for comics/manga/ranchdressing the Maxx is one of those must-read sort of things. I could go on and on about comics here as much as I do cartoons but blah blah blah fuck blah

RAMBLING AGAIN I AM A HUGE FAG HERE THEY ARE

.

.

.

theres alot more episodes of these. like 16 or so I think. obviously I wont be posting them all here.

okay next order of business, some Liquid Television stuff.

john r dilworth (courage the cowardly dog) made this next one
it'll be quite obvious once you see the characters teeth. that man makes some gruesome teeth.
ABUSE HIM

.

this next one is so loud and over the top
like a bad dream except featuring a cute pig
the nurse's laugh haunts me forevermore

.

this next one makes me sad
not because its a bad cartoon, its fucking incredible
its cause animation this good will never be on tv again. ever.

.

this next cartoon is NOT from liquid television. its much more recent, and made in flash. and really

really

really

gross.
my friend manwith10toes sent it to me and I have made sure to show it to as many people I know.

for extra punch make sure you are eating a popsicle or chocolate bar while you watch this
you can thank me later

.

this uh particular Great Cartoons post is filled with some rather creepy stuff this time so I will end it on something nice.

I like this animator. I've posted a couple of his cartoons in the past, but I dont think I've ever posted this one. catchy song too

.

And thats it for this post. I suggest everyone watch Hans van Harken's new kartuun.

thats all folks

Jun. 29, 2009 | 8:58 AM Luis says:

Who was the artist of the maxx and pitt series? I have it on the tip of my tongue. How closely does the cartoon match up with the comic book? I was pleased to see that the art style of both the cartoon and comic are in sync. Its not like the x-men cartoon where its sloppy compared to the comics.

I never did follow Maxx as a kid, but i was well aware of the series so it was kind of cool to see it again. or see it for the first time.. sorta.

Jun. 29, 2009 | 10:16 PM ZekeySpaceyLizard responds:

it matches pretty damn closely

Jun. 29, 2009 | 9:08 AM DaxI says:

Oh wow the Maxx, I loved the show. It was still running up around the 2000's where I come from.

Truth be told, I remember the awesome short cartoons they would show on MTV. Every year after I first saw them, I'd wait for them to come back on again. I'd ask my older sisters all the time. Sadly, they never aired them again. ;_;

Jun. 29, 2009 | 11:23 AM Sausau says:

Man, how The Maxx could ever be aired on TV ? Especially for kids ! It^s fucking brilliant. It's what I call an intelligent cartoon. You're right, they would never diffuse such a thing today, they prefer to drown kids into pink-flavoured banters. >:|

Oh by the way, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftI6od DuufI I am pretty sure you've already watched it, but a Michel Gondry is always good for the mind.

Jun. 29, 2009 | 10:11 PM ZekeySpaceyLizard responds:

yeah.
he's making a green hortnet movie now
which makes me furrow my brow a bit

Jun. 29, 2009 | 12:54 PM RainbowRiderAlpha says:

That's extremely hard to believe that MTV actually ran awesome stuff and not pointless shows about teenagers and money. It actually seems unbelievable that those cartoons were even aired. I can't think of any place you can find those kinds of animations now. I mean sure you have spongebob and flapjack (I guess), but those are pretty weak compared to all of those.

And apparently that last Liquid Television short you showed is longer and broken into two parts (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZHe1v hzjck).

Wow this is a pretty cool comment!!!

Jun. 29, 2009 | 10:11 PM ZekeySpaceyLizard responds:

oh good i couldnt find the second part fuckin youtube

Jun. 29, 2009 | 12:57 PM Starogre says:

i was surprised how much detail was put into the fbf animation of the liquid tv short too

I remember Maxx.. A dude in my animation class only spoke highly of it, so I checked it out. Very dark and creepy. I really enjoyed it.

Jun. 29, 2009 | 3:57 PM Zenaki says:

I vaugely remember watching the maxx as a kid but after watching the entirity of that film I feel better for it. It was dark, complex and had great characters. Good film. Thanks Zekey.

Jun. 29, 2009 | 5:37 PM MW10T says:

Also for anyone wanting to read the comics.
They are still good mind you, but after the comic surpasses the animated series, the story becomes quite depressing and gritty (er)

Jun. 29, 2009 | 10:13 PM ZekeySpaceyLizard responds:

it gets quite disturbing, yes

Jun. 29, 2009 | 6:35 PM Bug says:

Ugh, cuddle sticks took some effort to get through.

anyway thanks for posting some links to the Maxx. I was watching the series when youtube took it off. Now I can find out if Maxx has a rabbit face.

And I don't know when but I have the feeling that I saw the last one on T.V. before.

Jun. 29, 2009 | 10:15 PM ZekeySpaceyLizard responds:

i think the sound effect as the ...period..blood...splatters made me cringe the most

Jun. 29, 2009 | 10:54 PM homor says:

despite being like, 6 when the MAXX came out i still have very fond memories of it.

i remember going to sleep while the tape of the entire series my family bought was starting, and then waking up and seeing the end of the series.

oh sweet jesus the nostalgia. i think i'm going to cry. my heart is all warm 'n shit. thank you so fucking much for reminding me of this Zekey.

Jun. 29, 2009 | 10:59 PM homor says:

to be fair, i didn't know what was going on in it, but it was bright and colorful attention.

had i'd know what was happening, i'd most likely be scared for life considering your description of the comics.

Jul. 21, 2009 | 5:32 PM AngryNintendoNerd says:

The last one, I'm afraid, you've already posted before. Quite awkward and funny, though, but not as cringing and disgusting as Cuddle Sticks. That was horrific.

Also, we get MTV and MTV2 over in France, and they now have a program called MTV2 Legit, showcasing many 90's cartoons and shows for a two hour block, such as The State, Aeon Flux, Beavis and Butthead, Ren & Stimpy and The Maxx, along with commercials from the old MTV.

But Cuddle Sticks, man...just...wow.

Jul. 30, 2009 | 9:50 PM deadspread83 says:

I always loved the Maxx. I found a bootleg copy of the whole TV series on ebay. I would have bought a legitimate copy, but Fucking MTV / Viacom always sits on their properties until they rot. Oh well. A poor TV to VHS to DVD transfer will have to do...

Aug. 23, 2009 | 8:40 PM TheAutocrat says:

I remember the MAXX when it came on MTV along with the old Aeon Flux cartoon. I liked it, but I was very young and didnt really understand it. I love these cartoons, brings me back.
