Great Cartoons Part f

Posted by ZekeySpaceyLizard - September 4th, 2008

Why are there so many songs about rainbows?

A new muppet show is coming out. And despite the advertisement for it containing Ashley Simpson, I am still optimistic. Having watched the Great Muppet Caper last night for the umpteenth time and watching old reruns of Muppets Tonight.

So even though I guess puppets technically are not cartoons, I think some muppetry would be appropriate to remember all the good things Jim and Brian Henson and Frank Oz have brought us.
technically puppetry is a form of animation.

mostly I'm gonna post sesame street stuff. Lets be honest. EVERYONE has enjoyed sesame street to some extent, and for many of us, it fed our minds during childhood in the wee hours of the morning.

I Dont want to Live on the Moon
i always like how ernie and kermit's voice sound exactly the same.

Imagine That
this song kicks so much ass

.
/* */
Movin Right Along from the Muppet Movie

.
/* */
Of course this whole post isnt about puppetry.

First things first, I dont think enough of you know who Bruno Bozzetto is. Basically he's one of the greatest animators alive. He made his own musical rival for fantasia years ago called Allegro Non Troppo which is full of beautiful whimsical animation.

Nowadays he makes flash cartoons and has even put a few on newgrounds. Or at least he had a few here. But they, and his account, seem to be deleted now.

Well that stinks.
Oh well, you can still enjoy some of his animation here:

.
/* */
I AM THE WOLFMAN
I AM THE BRILLIANT DOG
crazy film by tim hope who works on the Mighty Boosh now
a large chunk of this was used in a commercial for the playstation quite a few years ago

.
/* */
I love you but i've chosen darkness

.
/* */
More than a year ago the National Film Board of canada set up an area of their website where they were uploading the best in canadian independent animation for people to watch for free. I even made a big post about it linking to my favorites. Sadly, that service is free no longer.

Or at least it wasn't last time I checked.
But the NFB has a youtube channel where they uploaded a very odd but nice short film called When the Day Breaks which toured with the Animation Show several years ago.

I actually have this on dvd

.
/* */
NOT SO FAST, JOKER
If ever a "The Killing Joke" or "The Man Who Laughs" movie is made, I hope its with the same animation quality this commercial has. Although, perhaps not these voices.
I think Richard Williams had something to do with these.

.
/* */
my good friend RedMongoose found this wonderfully weird stop motion film 1933
i think tim burton must have gotten some early inspiration from this thing

.
/* */
and my good friend mrat found this hilarious student film which has warmed my soul on many a cold night

.
/* */
And last but not least the sequel to Bathtime in Clerkenwell which you've probably seen already

.
/* */
and thats it for this time around.

Meh I Never Used To Watch Muppets
IN England we Had Big Bears Blue House

THAT WAS AWESOME

whats that smell? OH ITS YOU!!

The Sailor Moon one made my day.

Great finds as usual, that last one with the birds is spectacular.

WHO ARE YOU TO SAY WHICH CARTOONS ARE GREAT AND EXCLUDE THE ONES THAT ARE NOT GREAT

YOU PRETENTIOUS ASSHAT

IM GONNA KICK YOUR DICK OFF

FUCK YOU

Those Batman commercials were swell.

very

Please disregard jtm17's comment.

the I choose darkness one was awesome. I love cartoons/movies that dont resolve themselves really. Its like as a viewer you are preconditioned to expect some sort of happy closure and when a movie/animation purposely doesnt allow you that luxury its so great because you end up thinking about it and losing sleep over it. like i can still picture that crow desperately trying to fly off right now.

i assumed the owl was the one that tied down the crow in the first place
it seems to be grimly satisfied at the crow's plight

i've seen most of these, as i browse a lot of cartoons and animations myself anyway. also, i have the animation show dvd also. some good stuff is on there.

yes
it came here to tampa once and i wanted to go so badly but i missed it
and now mike and don dont run it anymore and i'll never get the chance to meet them

haha that student film was pretty funny

and the i choose darkness one had a weird effect on me, the animator captured that birds struggle really well

the zellers commercial was awesome, I only wish commercials were like that nowadays too....

I also liked that devils ball toon too.

dammit they were all so good

the best animated commercials I see these days are those Geico ones. you'd think doing a photorealistic lizard would be creepy in an 'uncanny valley' sort of way.
But they somehow managed to make him cute and friendly and not weird to look at.

some of those older e-surance commercials were great as well
with all the monsters

Thanks for sharing some of these!

"my good friend WPS found this wonderfully weird stop motion film 1933"

uhhhm redm linked me to dat
he knows some more about the clip

i shall edit der posht

Ernie sounds like Kermit and HOLY SHIT BERT SOUNDS LIKE FOZZIE

MIND = BLOWN

WAKKA WAKKA WAKKA

You should check out some of Jan Svankmajer's stuff if you haven't already. It's pretty sick.

No no, I love his things.
We have his Alice in Wonderland film in the foreign film section of the video store I work at.
I've been trying to get my hands on a copy of his film "Lunacy" but havent been able to find it here.

edit:

now that i think about it, the scifi channel used to show a few of his short films from years ago

The Muppets are the shit, I got the first and second seasons of the Muppet show on DVD.

Really? If only they stuck to stuff like that and not their original movies. I saw a lot of his short films at a postmodernism summer scholars camp thing. People complained around the tenth film or so unfortunately and they turned it off.

scifi still makes good stuff....once every 20 times or so....

TinMan was good

HOW DID YOU FIND LAST TIME IN CLERKENWELL!? i looked all over for that and couldnt find it when i looked after you posted the first part... sly bastard

and i loved the way the birds feathers moved in the ive chosen darkness...

I read about you getting hired on your blog

Congrats Zekey

thank you!!

the real tuesday weld or whatever is fucking great

I had no idea wolf men spent their time flying through planets on carbon rockets and punching suns.

Why was Bruno deleted? I remember him.

i dunno. i'd ask tom but ffff
